Google Panda, launched in 2011, was meant as way to keep the low quality, uninteresting websites down, while promoting the high quality sites up in the results. And it delivered on its promise – a lot of the websites that put in millions of dollars’ worth of advertising, but had mediocre content on their websites, found out that their online rank started to drastically drop down. This is all well, because the quality is the aspect that matters in the end, not how much the websites have paid for advertising. Google Penguin on the other hand was launched in 2012. And the essence of this update was that it banned the black hat techniques of improving one’s online website rank. If a website broke one of the Google’s Webmaster Guidelines set the by the search engine, then it became liable to lose its online ranking and drop down on the list. This is a very useful update as well because it means that the pure, unadulterated quality websites will rise to the top, while the black hat engineered websites will fall down.
